May 2013: Love & Relationships – Susan Allan

Love & Relationships Apr 29, 2013 No Comments

Dear Susan,

I spent so many years taking workshops and seminars to feel more peaceful and happy, but it still seems that I’m stuck in a place between frustration and fear. What can I do to finally move on; I am desperate for a happy life!

Sincerely yours,

Ronnie, Santa Barbara

Dear Ronnie,

I understand this experience, and, like so many of us on the path to a peaceful transformed life experience, I have been there, too. For me, the first step was to accept the aspects of my life I didn’t enjoy and discontinue struggling. This is counter-intuitive, I know, and seems like the opposite of what would work. Only when I could accept the situations I was facing was I able to begin to take the necessary steps to resolve certain situations. And the first step always begins with careful research into options. Whether your situation is about a need for inner peace; financial or health challenges; relationship issues; or even addiction, the first step to solving these is peaceful acceptance of where you are today.

Sincerely yours,

Susan

Dear Susan,

As Mother’s Day approaches, I’m very concerned about my mother’s health and I’m not sure how to help her. She has been diagnosed with dementia, and it’s so hard to speak with her about decisions that need to be made for her safety and comfort. How do I handle these decisions without feeling guilty?

Sincerely yours,

Johnny, Goleta, CA

Dear Johnny,

For most adults who are caring for elderly or challenged parents, the question is the same as yours. Since your mother has made her own decisions for so long, part of the challenge is to shift into this new relationship. With other decisions we make, as with a pet or a baby, we must jump in from the beginning, right? Now you are in the same position as you would be with a child, making the best well-informed decisions. Because you have known your mother for so long, you have an understanding of her preferences which is not possible with a small child; right? As you consider her preferences, and as you do research into the best options that exist and that meet everyone’s needs, I look forward to hearing any questions you may have or any requests for resources. Santa Barbara is the ideal city for your mom due to the countless facilities at all cost and care levels.

Sincerely yours,

Susan
